Arrested. Agents of the Guardia Civil arrested late on Wednesday the man under investigation as the driver of the Jeep Wrangler which on Tuesday afternoon fatally hit the Ibizan cyclist Bernat Ribas, 49, as they were driving along the Camí de Benimussa, in Sant Josep.
According to information gathered by Periódico de Ibiza y Formentera, the driver was arrested in Sant Antoni after turning himself in at the Ses Païsses post shortly before midnight.
After the fatal hit-and-run, the driver of the SUV fled, leaving Bernat Ribas (who died on the spot from the injuries caused by the violent impact) and Toni Tur 'Sopes', a cyclist who was riding next to Ribas.
Barely 15 hours later, agents of the Traffic Accident Investigation and Analysis Group (GIAT) of the Guardia Civil located the Jeep, abandoned in a spot near Casita Verde, about 10 minutes from kilometer 1.600, the scene of the fatal hit-and-run.
The location of the car made it possible to identify its owner. The investigators tightened the siege and the Guardia Civil intensified controls throughout the island. Late on Wednesday the investigated person appeared at the Guardia Civil.
