The Guardia Civil arrested a passenger of Italian nationality at Ibiza airport on Thursday for a false bomb threat. The detainee, who was apparently intoxicated according to the Benemérita, said he was carrying an explosive device shortly before his flight, FR8335, took off for the Italian airport of Bergamo.
It was then that the relevant protocol was activated and the aircraft stopped on the runway at es Codolar airport. The Guardia Civil arrived on the runway and members of the Special Explosives Disposal Group (GEDEX) inspected the aircraft and ruled out the presence of any bomb on the aircraft.
The bomb threat brought all activity to a standstill at Ibiza airport, where no flights had taken off or landed since 15:45 due to the security incident.
According to what AENA confirmed to Periódico de Ibiza y Formentera, a total of three flights were diverted to Palma airport. Specifically, they were flights from Bologna, London and Bilbao which, due to the incident, were unable to land at es Codolar airport at the scheduled time.
The security protocol was deactivated at 16:45 hours.
