A resident of Sant Antoni de Portmany warned this Saturday that the high water consumption in the municipality in the summer months means that many residents, especially if they live in high-rise flats, are left without water during certain hours of the day. ‘Basically I don't have any water coming out of my shower right now,’ he told Periódico de Ibiza y Formentera early Friday morning.
The citizen said he had spoken to the concessionary responsible for the supply «in case there were problems because I've been like this for several days and they told me that the water is what it is and that I'm sure that in winter it won't happen to me».
The Sant Antoni Town Council explained on Friday that these ‘occasional’ incidents usually occur in high-rise blocks of flats, and are aggravated by the absence of pressure groups. According to them, in summer there is a higher consumption due to human pressure and high temperatures, which means that the pressure in the network can drop at certain times, but in no case is the supply lost.
The Consistory pointed out that these situations can be resolved by using pressure groups, since the buildings' connections have the appropriate flow and pressure to do so. Simultaneous consumption in the buildings and surrounding areas causes 'insignificant' drops in power at times. In the absence of these groups, Sant Antoni insisted that these situations could be noticed on the higher floors.
They also explained that the current water pressure range is between 2.55 and 3.86 kg/cm², whereas the service recommends 1 kg for common taps and 1.5 kg for heaters.
The Ibiza Town Hall acknowledged that during the summer low pressure is registered only in some high areas of the city, such as Dalt Vila or Puig des Molins.
For the residents of Sant Josep, the supply problems have improved since, as the Consistory assured on Saturday, all residents now have desalinated water all year round and thus avoid having to take water from the municipal wells. So far, they said, no supply problems have been reported.
Last March, Sant Josep claimed to have achieved an overall reduction in water consumption of 7% in 2024 compared to the previous year. This trend would also be consolidated in 2025, with a reduction of 16% in January and 13.5% in February compared to last year, reaching an average saving of 14.75% in the first two months of 2025.
The Town Council also appreciated that, unlike in previous years, it was not necessary to use well water in areas such as Sa Caleta last summer. Historically, there had been cut-offs or alternative supplies had to be activated in these areas. In addition, exhaustive control of large consumers, particularly second home developments, holiday homes and hotels, has been carried out.
The Town Council also valued the fact that last summer it was not necessary to use well water in areas such as sa Caleta, where historically there had been cut-offs or alternative supplies had to be activated. In addition to this, the exhaustive control of large consumers, especially second home developments, tourist homes and hotel establishments, has also been carried out.
In Sant Joan they confirmed on Friday that they had no record of problems related to supply, as in the municipality of Santa Eulària. However, the town council recalled that the island is in a pre-alert situation due to drought, which could lead to temporary drops in water pressure if a tank cannot be filled at the required speed during the summer. In addition, there may be occasional drops in power in certain pipes due to the simultaneous demand of numerous subscribers. «We are on alert and monitoring the situation to guarantee the service at all times», concluded Santa Eulària.
