On 22 July, Nana Marina Cruz, an Ajq'iij (spiritual guide) from the Tz'utujil Mayan community, will arrive in Ibiza with some of her family to share her ancestral healing practices. Hailing from San Pedro La Laguna on the shores of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, Nana Marina is a healer and teacher of the Mayan calendar, as well as a facilitator of traditional ceremonies involving fire, cacao, temazcal and tobacco.
It is a great honour to welcome her, as she is the bearer of a spiritual lineage passed down by her father, the revered Tata Pedro Cruz. She is also an active advocate for indigenous culture and rights. Alongside her spiritual work, she runs community projects to preserve traditions and promote wellbeing for her people.
The Living Altar at Las Dalias
As part of the event, the Las Dalias Night Market will host a unique ceremonial encounter: 'The Living Altar of the Tz'utujiles', offering an insight into Mayan cosmology and providing an opportunity to connect with the body, spirit and energy of fire.
The ceremony will take place on 22 July at 20:00 and admission will be free. Each element of the altar will have deep symbolic meaning, offering insight into time, nature and healing from the Mayan people's ancestral viewpoint.
A bond stretching from Guatemala to Ibiza
This ceremony is an act of reciprocity and continuity. In 2024, Las Dalias visited the Jun Imox Association in Guatemala, which is led by Nana Marina's family. They supported the association's work in transmitting knowledge and creating a healing centre.
This link has now been materialised in Ibiza with this special visit, which invites us to participate in a moment of presence, gratitude and learning.
