Formentera begins the «half ban» on wood pigeon hunting

This species has become one of the main threats to local agriculture

| Ibiza |

On August 24th, the Formentera Council opened the mid-season wood pigeon hunting season to reduce overpopulation on the island and minimise damage to crops caused by the species.

In a statement, the council highlighted that wood pigeons have become one of the main threats to local agriculture.

During the closed season, hunting will be permitted on both private reserves and public land. On private reserves, the season will begin on 24 August and continue until the start of the small game season. Hunting will be permitted on Thursdays and Sundays using shotguns and dogs, with a daily limit of 15 birds per hunter.

On public land, hunting will be permitted on Sundays only, in a fixed location and subject to authorisation from the Council's hunting services and the landowner. The daily bag limit will also be 15 wood pigeons per hunter.

The measure complements the exceptional authorisations introduced in May.

The Consell also reminded hunters that hare and rabbit hunting season began in July and will continue until 8 February. Until 1 September, hunting is only permitted on Thursdays and Sundays and only with dogs.

Small game hunting season will begin on October 19th and continue until January 4th.
