The Guardia Civil has arrested a man and a woman on suspicion of starting a fire last week that endangered the lives and physical integrity of people and burnt down three commercial premises in Playa d'en Bossa.
In a statement, the Guardia Civil said that the fire broke out in the early hours on June 10th in commercial premises on the ground floor of a residential building in Platja d'en Bossa with 193 properties. The blaze affected two restaurants and a cannabis club.
Thanks to the efforts of security personnel, neighbourhood warnings, and the work of Guardia Civil and local police patrols, the residents were evacuated, five of whom required treatment for smoke inhalation.
For all these reasons, the Judicial Police Team of the Guardia Civil of Ibiza began an investigation to clarify the facts. As a result of the investigations carried out, and after the analysis of the remains of the fire by the Criminalistics Laboratory of the Guardia Civil, it was possible to verify that the fire had been arson, as well as the causes and perpetrators.
On the night of the 9th, the arrested woman was asked to leave a restaurant due to her aggressive and obnoxious behaviour towards the staff and customers. According to several witnesses, the woman and the arrested man were known to spend the nights in the dunes on the beach and were very problematic.
Subsequently, at around 01.00 hours, when all the premises were closed, these two persons approached the restaurant and started a small fire which extinguished itself after a few minutes. Half an hour later, they returned and started another fire using a flammable substance, which quickly spread throughout the building. They also caused damage to the dune area of the maritime land area in front of the shops.
On Sunday, the pair left Ibiza on a ship bound for Valencia, where they were arrested on arrival by Guardia Civil officers.
