The government led by Rafa Triguero is clear that one of Ibiza Town's main problems is the lack of parking spaces. The team came to the town hall with the idea of creating 2,000 new parking spaces in the municipality, and now everything is ready for these projects to be realised. The mayor, Rafa Triguero, told Periódico de Ibiza y Formentera.
He recalled that, during his first two years in office, the council had done a great deal of work to increase the number of parking spaces and improve park-and-ride facilities. However, these measures have not been enough to provide the city with the necessary number of parking spaces. "We have a clear understanding of the city's parking capacity," explained the mayor, and added that we must be aware that the water table is only one and a half metres deep».
«In the future, there will be car parks built in the city centre», he added. For this reason, after analysing all the possibilities, the municipal government has decided to build multi-storey car parks.
According to Triguero, this will be done in the Cas Dominguets car parks, the car park next to the Es Pratet sports centre, and the car park next to the National Police station. This will be added to the car park already planned at one end of the Abel Matutes boulevard, which will have 1,000 spaces.
These car parks will be joined in the future by the car park envisaged by the Special Plan for the Port. This document has already passed the initial approval phase and has yet to receive final approval. This plan, as the mayor of Ibiza explained, contemplates the construction of an underground car park where the fishermen's wharf is located today. This car park will have between 400 and 700 spaces. «It will be a large public car park», concluded the mayor of the island's capital.
