Sant Josep now has an official new roundabout designed to reduce traffic in the town. After six months of work, the new roundabout providing access to the town centre was officially inaugurated on Monday. For this event, the president of the Consell d'Eivissa, Vicent Mari; the mayor of Sant Josep, Vicent Roig; and the councillor for road infrastructures, Mariano Juan; travelled to the eastern entrance of the town to open the roundabout.
According to Roig, the work was carried out over the last few months at a cost of more than 800,000 euros. He also explained that the joint venture formed by Tecnología de la Construcción y Obras Públicas S.A. and Hermanos Parrot, S.A. was entrusted with executing the work on the roundabout at the entrance to Sant Josep.
«These works will put an end to the dangerous junction between the road and Avenida Diputado Josep Ribas, where there are numerous municipal, educational and sports facilities in the area», said Marí, noting that, thanks to this infrastructure, drivers and pedestrians will be safer, «who will see a significant reduction in the speed of vehicles circulating at this point. Along the same lines, he also indicated that the roundabout represents a ‘reorganisation’ of traffic flow that will ‘pacify the effect of road traffic in the urban centre of Sant Josep, and indicated that with this new roundabout ’we are responding to a demand from the town and the Town Hall to improve safety and improve vehicle traffic in the urban centre».
New infrastructure
Marí recalled that this new roundabout will be added to the other planned roundabout, which is currently in the drafting phase, on the western access road to the town from Sant Antoni.
The island president emphasised that this measure will enable drivers to change direction at the entrance and exit of the village, eliminating the need for left turns and alleviating the traffic congestion currently experienced on one of the streets in the village centre.
«The aim of this infrastructure is to improve traffic flow in the town centre», he said. The island's president also highlighted the Consell d'Eivissa's commitment to the island's town councils to carry out road projects as important for the different localities as these roundabouts in Sant Josep.
He also pointed out the efforts of the Consell d'Eivissa to improve the safety of the road network, recalling that there are many projects that need investment from a new road agreement with the State Government. «I will not tire of the claims to execute many projects aimed at improving it and since 2019 we are claiming a road agreement with the Government of Spain that does not arrive», he lamented.
For his part, the mayor of Sant Josep, Vicent Roig, pointed out «the good pace of execution of this work that already allows us to travel more safely along this stretch» and thanked the Consell for its work in terms of investment in road infrastructure «which in the municipality already represents an investment of four million euros in this legislature for improvements such as the asphalting of the road to es Cubells».
