The 28-metre-long yacht Da Vinci A, which is based in Alicante, reported a fire on board on Monday morning while it was in waters south of Ibiza near Es Vedrà. According to Luis Gascón, Ibiza's maritime captain, it sank "after its entire superstructure burned considerably".

Mr Gascón confirmed that the yacht sank at 18:19 in waters outside the Ses Salines Natural Park, and that the cause of the fire is still unknown. The maritime captain of Ibiza also confirmed to Periódico de Ibiza y Formentera on Monday morning that the flames had started in the engine room.

When the fire broke out on Monday morning, there were four passengers, two crew members and the captain on board the yacht. The passengers were transferred from the Ibanat boat to the rescue boat. According to information gathered by this media outlet, no one was injured.

Initially, it seemed that the fire was under control. However, when the Maritime Rescue Service began towing the ship, the fire in the engine room intensified. As the ship moves towards the port of Ibiza, the column of black smoke is growing and can be seen from various points on the island. Residents of Sa Caleta and passengers travelling to the mainland on a regular service spotted the dense column of black smoke and alerted this newspaper. Ultimately, the ship sank.
