They got their start 20 years ago when they organised a small party for friends, quite by chance. They were all DJs at different clubs in the municipality of Sant Antoni. Petit worked at the Tropicana, while Vázquez worked at the Casanova. Following the success of this first event, they approached the Portmany council to organise a public event, which also proved to be a huge success. Two decades have passed since those early days, and to celebrate La Movida's 20^(th) anniversary, they are throwing a big party on Saturday at S'Arenal Beach in Sant Antoni, starting at 9 pm.
The members of La Movida promise 'lots of surprises and a great time for everyone who comes', according to DJ Petit (José María Costa). It is no surprise that they are 'the band that draws the biggest crowds on the island at a local level', as DJ Petit himself says. In his view, their success is closely linked to the atmosphere created at their parties: «It's a place where everyone can feel comfortable and at ease».
Regarding this atmosphere, Petit says: "Before, our audience was a bit older, between 30 and 50, whereas now there is a younger audience that comes to the concerts and has a great time too.
This generational shift does not prevent La Movida's concerts from continuing to attract their most loyal fans: ‘There are people who have been in the front row at our concerts for 20 years and are still there, just like on the first day,’ says the DJ.
To keep up with the times, he says they have been updating their repertoire: «At first we played all music from the 80s, but now we also mix in songs from the 90s and even the 2000s».
Regarding the band's status, he assures us that it's 'very good' and that they have lots of projects and performances planned. Participating in the Hard Rock: Children of the 80s parties has made them very famous on the island. It is well known that this hotel brand is set to disappear, and rumour had it that this party might do the same. However, Petit is optimistic, saying: 'The party will continue, and we are confident that the new location will be announced soon.'
Finally, DJ Petit encouraged the whole island to attend the party planned for Saturday, saying, 'We want to give back to the island some of the love it has always given us with a performance full of surprises.'
