Ebony Cordingley, 26, and her friend Lauren Holmes, 27, were on holiday in Ibiza, looking forward to some relaxation. However, during the trip, they were hit by a car in the early hours of Wednesday morning on the road from Ibiza to Sant Antoni. They were left seriously injured and are currently hospitalised on the island. Ebony is at the Nuestra Señora del Rosario private polyclinic and Lauren is at Can Misses Hospital.
Mainstream British media outlets have reported on the incident, and the families are seeking help to transfer the women back to the UK. It should be noted that Ebony is a mother of three and Lauren is a mother of two.
According to the BBC, doctors have informed Cordingley’s family that she suffered a bilateral fracture in the lower part of her body, accompanied by open wounds that required emergency surgery. She also has broken ribs, a brain haemorrhage and a punctured lung. Meanwhile, Holmes is in hospital with two broken legs, a broken arm, a fractured spine, broken ribs and a punctured lung. He is currently in the intensive care unit at Can Misses Hospital. «She is stable but awaiting surgery. I just want her to come home to the UK with me,« said Bernice Ramsden, Holmes’s mother. However, they are aware that, in order to bring their daughter back to the UK for additional treatment, they will have to pay £30,000.
Both families want their daughters back and have therefore started a fundraiser to cover the costs of transferring the patients, medical expenses and the ‘long-term’ financial support they will need to care for the children of those affected. A spokesperson for the Immigration Office has stated that they are in contact with local authorities to help the families.
«In what should have been a happy holiday with a friend in Ibiza, our beloved daughter, sister and friend Lauren was struck by a speeding taxi in the early hours of Tuesday 26 August, and is now in critical condition in intensive care. As you can imagine, this sudden and devastating accident has turned all our lives upside down and we are facing the most terrifying moment of our lives,‘ wrote Tyla Gray, a friend of Lauren Holmes, on GoFundMe, where the fundraising campaign is being held. She added that doctors ’are doing everything they can, but it is true that her recovery will be long, uncertain and incredibly difficult».
Gray has stated that they do not know the severity of her injuries, but they are aware that ‘she is in another country far away from her two children, who need their mother more than ever.’ Although they are taking care of the children, there will be various expenses for their care and relocation, as well as for her long-term recovery, which is why they are asking for this financial assistance.
According to The Sun, Ebony Cordingley’s sister has also organised a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs. In the campaign, she wrote: «During what should have been a happy holiday in Ibiza, our beloved sister Ebony was struck by a taxi in the early hours of Tuesday, 26 August, and is now in critical condition in an intensive care unit».
As for the young women’s condition, Shannon added in the Daily Mail that she cannot provide an update on Lauren’s condition as she only knows what information she has received. However, she confirmed that Ebony has a brain haemorrhage, bleeding in her lungs, a broken leg and ribs, and multiple bruises. Ebony’s sister also stated that their mother has flown to Ibiza to meet with the embassy.
