Following the snake invasion in Ibiza, a petition was started to demand the dismissal of Víctor Colomar, the coordinator of the Consortium for the Recovery of Fauna in the Balearic Islands (Cofib) in Ibiza and Formentera. Environmentalists on the island have shown their support for the person in charge of the fight against snakes in Ibiza and defended their work.
On Friday, GEN-GOB shared an article from Periódico de Ibiza y Formentera on social media, outlining the petition by those affected and explaining that the association and the Sargantanes o Serps platform (of which they are a part, together with Amics de la Terra Ibiza) want to support the work being carried out by Cofib staff, taking into account the limited resources available to them to deal with this pest.
In the same publication, they denounce the fact that ‘while snakes are multiplying and spreading to every corner of the island, the population of «sargantanes» is declining at an alarming rate’, and they add that ‘decades of institutional indifference have only resulted in a purely cosmetic decree from the previous legislature, and this has led us to the current situation’.
As for the petition, which was launched on Thursday, it has been shared on social media groups such as the ‘Ibiza Snake Trappers Community’, whose members express their ‘deep concern’ about the invasion of snakes in Ibiza. This problem has put the Ibizan lizard at serious risk. The community states that despite efforts being made, the situation has worsened considerably and highlights a lack of effective results on the part of the current technical manager of Cofib.
Environmental associations, however, consider it inappropriate to focus criticism on its workers.
