The Eivissa Jazz International Festival will celebrate its 37th edition from 1 to 6 September, offering a programme that will take place at various locations around the city, such as Passeig de Vara de Rey, Parc Reina Sofia and Baluate de Santa Llúcia. The presentation was attended by Carmen Domínguez, Councillor for Culture at Ibiza Town Council, and Vicent Tur, artistic director of the festival, as well as artists Carlos Sarduy and dancer Penélope.
Carmen Domínguez highlighted the consolidation of the festival throughout its 37-year history: ‘We want Ibiza to be known not only for its beaches, but also as a cultural city. This festival is a benchmark that has stood the test of time and has even survived difficult situations, such as the pandemic’.
Vicent Tur revealed some details of the programme and highlighted the diversity of styles and the quality of the participating musicians. The first day, Monday 1 September, featured a performance by the Jove Big Band Sedajazz in Vara de Rey, followed the next day by concerts by the Goran Levi Quartet and Miquel Àngel Rigo Quintet, also in Vara de Rey. On Wednesday 3 September, the Parc Reina Sofia will host the Big Band Ciutat d’Eivissa and singer Claudia Bardagí, while on 4 September it will be the turn of the Baluate de Santa Llúcia, where AIEI - Álex Conde Trio and Anja Gottberg Quartet will perform. On Friday 5 September, also at the Baluarte, Jacky Terrasson Trio and Abe Rábade i Eivissa Jazz Experience will take to the stage, and finally, on Saturday 6 September, Carlos Sarduy & Groove Messengers and Escalandrum will close the edition.
Tur also highlighted the importance of featuring local artists who have grown up on the island, as well as international musicians. Among them are Penélope, who started out as a student at the island’s jazz school and is now participating as a guest artist, and Carlos Sarduy, a trumpet player, who expressed his satisfaction at performing on such an iconic stage: ‘It is an honour to play in a place like the Baluarte, sharing music with colleagues and the Ibiza audience’.
The festival aims to support the island’s music scene and showcase local talent. Tur says, «We have a lot of art here and we can’t let it go to waste. This festival gives everyone the chance to enjoy a week of quality jazz».
