The European Commission has selected Ibiza as a finalist for the ‘Pionero Verde of Smart Tourism 2026’ award. It is competing against Dubrovnik (Croatia), Geestland (Germany), Laois (Ireland), Mariagerfjord (Denmark), Marmaris (Turkey), Rebild (Denmark) and Tartu (Estonia). The island’s candidacy was chosen from 26 proposals submitted by 18 countries.

The Smart Tourism initiative recognises cities that implement new digital tools and practices, provide equal opportunities and access for visitors, promote sustainable development, and support creative industries and local talent. Through this competition, the European Commission is promoting and rewarding the future of smart and sustainable tourism in Europe.

All finalists will present their proposals to a European jury in Brussels on 18 and 19 November 2025. The winner of the 2026 edition will then be selected.

The competition is open to cities in EU countries and non-EU countries that participate in the Single Market Programme (SMP), formerly the COSME Programme. Eligible countries for the award include the 27 EU Member States, as well as non-EU countries participating in the SMP, such as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Kosovo, Liechtenstein, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, Turkey and Ukraine.
