It's common knowledge that parking spaces in Ibiza are in high demand. As well as the public spaces in the car parks surrounding Ibiza Town, there are other private car parks, such as Es Pratet, which is known for its rip-offs in the summer. However, years ago, you could park in the same car park for free. Of course, you had to contend with drug addicts who would spend the night there, asking for coins or cigarettes. If you refused, they might puncture your tyres, urinate under your vehicle or threaten you with a syringe.
The Instagram profile of 'Idò Matals', who describe themselves as 'a trilogy of mafia peasants, a rock and comedy band, and candidates for the presidency of Ibiza', has posted a humorous video showing the sad reality of Ibiza today. In the past, you could leave your car in what was popularly known as 'Yonki Park' for two days in exchange for a few coins or cigarettes that the drug addicts asked you for. Now, parking in that private car park for two hours costs €56 in summer, as they posted in their satirical video on Saturday. «Do you remember 'yonki park'? Do you want it back too?» they ask ironically.
The private car park in Es Pratet was built by the owners of the land located in this area known as Action Unit No. 13 (UA-13) of Es Pratet and began operating as a private business in 2010. It cost around one million euros and occupies 27,000 m2, which is almost the entire area that until 2008 was used as free park-and-ride facilities, but due to a planning disagreement between Ibiza Town Council and the owners, these were closed to the public.
