Since July 2024, the Department of the Environment at Sant Antoni Town Council has processed a total of 193 cases for violations detected in the municipality’s container areas.
Of these, 123 were identified by the video surveillance system and 70 were reported by the municipal guard. All cases were in breach of Law 7/2022 on waste and contaminated soil for a circular economy.
The Town Council said that the total value of the fines could reach €240,000. Most of the violations relate to waste being disposed of outside the designated containers. This practice is classified as a minor offence and is punishable by fines ranging from €300 to €9,000. In some cases, the volume of waste or the degree of intent has resulted in fines of up to €2,000, while in others, the minimum amount has been applied.
One of the most significant cases was identified by cameras and involved four industrial electrical and electronic devices that had been abandoned. A fine of €5,630 was proposed. The most serious offence detected by the municipal guard was the deposit of two CO₂ cylinders, resulting in a fine of €2,001.
Pepita Torres, the Councillor for the Environment, Beaches and Cleanliness, explained that ‘the installation of cameras has allowed us to act more effectively against uncontrolled dumping and significantly improve cleanliness at container sites’.
