Washing machines, toilets, construction debris, stretchers, tents... all kinds of waste were found yesterday during the cleanup in Cala Roja, a bay with approximately 500 meters of coastline located west of Cala Bassa, in Sant Josep. In total, according to Joan Sillero, president of the Ibiza Volunteers Association, and Jorge P. Bruges, president of the environmental association Creatives For The Planet, up to 1.5 tons of waste were collected from «an old abandoned landfill.»

«We managed to remove 240 kilos of glass and 130 kilos of packaging, and a total of 1.5 tons of miscellaneous material, including iron, rubble, and other debris. It was an old landfill with buried objects,» Jorge P. Bruges told Periódico de Ibiza y Formentera.

For their part, the Ibiza Volunteers Association added that it was impossible for the garbage trucks to enter the area. «We didn't expect to find this amount of debris,» said Joan Sillero, emphasizing that they had set up several collection points on the mountain with more than 15 volunteers from the organization. He stated that, due to this large amount of waste, they contacted the Sant Josep City Council to arrange for the Department of the Environment to travel to this area of the town and remove the remains found by the volunteers.

«It's impossible to transport everything we found,» stated Jorge P. Bruges, explaining that they separated the waste into different containers for iron, packaging, and glass.

More than 20 volunteers

An initiative organized by Creatives for the Planet, in collaboration with the Ibiza Volunteer Association, brought together a total of more than 20 volunteers willing to care for the island's natural environment on a day that, according to Jorge P. Bruges, not only raised awareness but also had a real impact on Ibiza.

«It is essential to continue carrying out more cleanup actions in the forests, as we are realizing that there are many illegal dumps on the island that need to be cleaned up,» he emphasized.
