May was a ‘warm’ and ‘wet’ month in the Balearic Islands, with an average temperature of 18.9°C recorded in the archipelago, which is 0.8°C higher than normal. Rainfall totalled 47.1 litres per square metre, which is 44% higher than normal.
According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the islands experienced above-average temperatures. Ibiza was the most notable, classified as 'very warm', with an average temperature of 19.4°C and a thermal anomaly of +1.1°C. This was followed by Formentera at 20.3°C with an anomaly of +0.6°C, Mallorca at 18.8°C with an anomaly of +0.8°C, and Menorca at 18.7°C with an anomaly of +0.7°C.
The highest maximum temperatures were recorded on May 30th: 34.2°C in Sant Antoni de Portmany; 33.1°C in Binissalem; and 31.6°C in Ciutadella Cala Galdana. In Formentera, the maximum temperature was 27.5°C. The lowest minimum temperatures were 3.7°C in Mallorca, 8°C in Ibiza, 8.8°C in Menorca, and 13°C in Formentera.
In terms of rainfall, May was generally a 'wet' month. The average rainfall was 47.1 litres per square metre, which is 44% more than normal. By island, it was 'very wet' on Formentera (34.0 l/m² — 90% more than usual), 'wet' on Mallorca (51.4 l/m² — 47% more) and Menorca (42.3 l/m² — 56% more), and normal on Ibiza (22.6 l/m² — 8% less than expected).
Rare phenomena were observed, such as a waterspout in Cala Murada, Mallorca on the 11th, and a waterspout in Portinatx, Ibiza on the 14th.
In terms of wind, it was a normal month in the Balearic Islands. There were two days of strong winds at Ibiza Airport. There were no days of strong winds in Formentera, and the most intense gusts were measured in Cabrera (81 km/h), Serra d'Alfàbia (80 km/h), Menorca Airport (72 km/h) and Ibiza (55 km/h).
