Andoni Valencia, a member of the AD Ibiza Half Triathlon club, encountered a snake approximately two metres long this Wednesday while he was cycling along the road between Sant Rafel and Santa Agnès, near Bucastell.
The reptile was lying on the asphalt, apparently after having been hit by a car that had just overtaken the cyclist.
The population of these reptiles has increased significantly. While the snakes found are not venomous and do not pose a serious threat to humans, they do threaten other small species, such as the Podarcis pityusensis — an endemic species of lizard from the Pitiusas Islands.
