On Saturday, Las Dalias street market hosted a new edition of 'Discover the Taste of Ibiza', an event organised in collaboration with Sabors d'Eivissa and Pimeef to promote local produce and make it more accessible to residents and tourists. Held from 10 am to 2 pm, the day offered free tastings and was designed to provide information on gastronomy with live demonstrations.
From the outset, Marga Orell, the chef in charge of the Sabors d'Eivissa stand, prepared cold soups made with seasonal fruit, such as melon and mint and watermelon gazpacho. She explained that the aim of these recipes is not to recreate complex local dishes, but rather to demonstrate the versatility of local produce in a practical way. "I take the product and change its texture. Instead of giving you a piece of watermelon or melon, I turn it into a soup. It's still melon; I just add melon and mint, or for the gazpacho, watermelon, tomato, red onion, garlic and a little apple vinegar", he explained.
The idea is to teach participants to identify the zero-kilometre product that they can then find in restaurants on the island that are members of Sabors d'Eivissa, as well as in supermarkets, where there are white labels for local products and green ones for organic ones. ‘On the shelves you can see the white label if it is local, and green if it is organic, as is the case with Can Rich's oil or its wines, which are all organic,’ explained another participant.
During the morning, several people were attracted by the posters advertising the activity, although Marga explained that, despite the interest, this season has been weaker. "This year people are not consuming as much. With this stall they think we are selling juices, but no, it's a free tasting to show them the flavours from here", she commented. As he explained, they have changed the showcooking format for a direct tasting and information point.
Sabors d'Eivissa organises this type of event every week in a different municipality. On the first Saturday, they visit the Ibiza market; on the second, Las Dalias; on the third, the Sant Josep market; and on the fourth Sunday, the Sant Joan market. This allows them to cover all parts of the island and strengthen brand awareness. This Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, Las Dalias will continue its Night Market programme, combining gastronomy with independent designs, handmade jewellery and live music in its Sant Carles space.
