The first Master's programme in Spanish wines will take place from November 10th to November 14th at the Escuela de Hostelería de Ibiza. Javier Escandell, the coordinator from Enotecum, points out that ‘although it may seem strange, this subject has never been taught in Spain before. Normally, when people sign up for a master's degree in wine, the courses tend to focus on France or Italy, leaving Spanish wines to one side’.
In a renowned tourist destination like Ibiza, it is becoming increasingly common to attract visitors interested in fine wines. Moreover, the island is constantly seeing the opening of restaurants that can already be found in other large cities, and all of the staff who arrive are foreign wine experts. For this reason, the School of Hospitality and Catering considers it essential to promote a course that highlights the qualities of Spanish wines, a sector that has undergone significant transformation in the last 20 years.
The week-long Master's course will feature interesting lectures by leading experts and will be attended by participants from all over the world. ‘It will be the first time that a course of this level has been held in Spain,’ Escandell points out.
The master's degree, which will be taught in Spanish, will be aimed at professionals so that they can learn how to correctly select the Spanish wines that they will then sell. Professionals from the distribution and HORECA sectors, sommeliers and oenologists will be able to enrol if they wish to keep up to date on trends and the evolution of consumption, as well as on Spanish wine production. Obtaining the «Wines of Spain Master's Degree» and the Spanish Wine Ambassador certification will certify the mastery of different skills in the sector.
