On Wednesday, the island's councillor for Tourism Planning, Mariano Juan, confirmed that the maximum quota of 16,000 rental vehicles authorised to circulate around Ibiza had already been exceeded this summer. He also warned that the maximum of 4,108 authorisations for private vehicles travelling by boat could be reached in August. Mr Juan explained that there have so far been peaks of between 3,000 and 3,200 applications per day from private individuals, representing 75% of the total permitted. «We are not yet at the peak of the season, but we cannot rule out the possibility of reaching the maximum during August,» said Juan. He stressed that the tendency to plan trips at the last minute makes projections difficult, although forecasts indicate this possible congestion.
Regarding the platform set up by the Consell to control vehicle access to the island, Juan confirmed that the website is functioning correctly, although it is not yet fully automated. For the time being, shipping companies send data on tickets purchased each day, which the administration processes. The councillor also announced that they will begin imposing fines on drivers of illegal caravans this week. Priority had previously been given to information work agreed with the town councils, which, according to Juan, has had a positive impact. 'The usual groups of caravans seem to have dispersed and some have left the island. However, there are still vehicles circulating without authorisation due to ignorance," he warned. To reinforce control of entries, the Consell hopes to cross-reference registration data with the DGT's records, which would allow offenders to be detected and automatic penalties to be applied. For the time being, however, the Consell has not been able to obtain the DGT's cooperation in this regard.
It should be recalled that a total of 78 car rental companies submitted applications to the Consell d'Eivissa for the entry of 27,786 vehicles. The island institution admitted 74 companies with 27,215 vehicles. After the application of the proportional distribution algorithm approved by the plenary session of the institution, the fee finally allocated was 16,000 vehicles, with 74 companies being awarded the contract, of which 56 obtained 100% of the requested quota. The maximum allocated to each company is 600 vehicles.
